Deeper & Further Building Renovation

CBI is currently in the midst of our Deeper & Further building renovation. Work is progressing from the top down: the construction contractors completed the exterior first, and this week they will begin demolition on the upper floors. The renovation began in May 2025 and we aim to have it completed by October 2025.

Our building and its prime location have always been central to our effort to take the gospel deeper into the hearts of Japanese people and further to the uttermost parts of Japan. But our specific ministry needs have changed and multiplied over the past two decades. Space has become a constant challenge as we strive to accommodate multiple events simultaneously, including seminary classes, staff meetings, Bible studies, and ministry gatherings for seminary students and local Christian groups.

The good news is that we have the space—we just need to optimize it. We are soundproofing walls, turning closets into meeting rooms, expanding offices, and updating the entire facility for the future. We believe this effort is a vital part of the ministry to which God has called us.

Remaining Need for the Renovation Project

In fall 2024, using estimates from contractors, we set an initial fundraising goal of $380,000 for the renovation project. We raised that full amount between December 1, 2024, and January 31, 2025, for the following improvements:

a redesigned layout that will expand our central office space, optimize our classroom, and increase the number of meeting rooms
the addition of a beautiful chapel
the removal of obsolete HVAC equipment to open up storage areas, enable us to make better use of our roof space, and improve waterproofing
critical updates to our telephone and internet system to better equip our central office and enable our web ministry to grow

Now that we are actually in the renovation process, we have additional expenses that have led to an increased total: $580,000. In other words, we need to raise an additional $200,000 to complete the project.

Some of these are further improvements to the building that we have identified as necessary or cost-effective ($80,000):

library upgrades to accommodate 16,000 volumes for the seminary
updated and improved offices throughout the building
redesigned entrance and reception area to serve as an additional fellowship space
improved stairwell (safer and cleaner)
upgraded cafe space with better lighting and acoustics
new outdoor terrace seating and study space
two additional meeting rooms (created from closets)

Others were unexpected expenses:

disposal and replacement of the electrical system that we discovered contains toxic materials ($70,000)
replacement of air conditioning units throughout the building ($50,000)

We have already received $50,000 toward the additional $200,000 we need to complete the Deeper & Further renovation project. Would you consider giving a gift today to help us reach our goal?

Ways to Pray

Deeper & Further Conference: Please pray that preparation continues to go smoothly and that God would lead many Japanese Christians to participate.
Deeper & Further Building Renovation: Pray that our sovereign Lord would provide the funds, guide all the details, and give us wisdom as we make design decisions that will impact our space for years to come.
Christ Bible Seminary: The summer intensive classes have concluded. Please pray for students as they finish their summer assignments.
CBI Counseling: STEPS leaders are now assigning mentors for the participants. Pray that God would already be softening the participants’ hearts to experience the gospel at work amid their sin and suffering.
CBI Press: Praise God that we received the first shipment of the MyUchiSoto resources. Pray for continued preparation for our official fall release.
